Balancing Act: Juggling Game Development, Fatherhood, and a Full-Time Job

Hey fellow gamers and developers,

It’s been quite a journey working on my indie game, Head North, and I wanted to share some insights into the challenges I’ve been facing lately. As many of you know, game development is a demanding and time-consuming endeavor, and when you add a full-time day job and the responsibilities of being a husband and dad to a 2-year-old, it becomes a true balancing act.

I wear multiple hats during the day, working as a 3D Generalist and C++ developer at a company from 9 am to 6 pm. The days are packed with challenges and problem-solving, but it’s a rewarding experience. However, the real struggle begins when the workday ends.

Once I’m home, my focus shifts to my family. Quality time with my wife and daughter is a top priority, and it’s incredibly fulfilling. But, as the clock ticks, the realization hits that there’s another passion waiting for my attention – the development of Head North.

Late into the night, after my family is asleep, I fire up Unreal Engine 5 and dive into the world I’m creating. The creative process is invigorating, but the challenge lies in finding the energy and mental clarity after a full day of work and family commitments. It’s a delicate dance, and sometimes the game development aspect takes a backseat.

I’ve found that maintaining this balance is crucial not only for my game but also for my overall well-being. It’s about setting realistic expectations and understanding that progress might be slow but steady. Communication with my family is key, ensuring they understand the passion and commitment I have for Head North.

To my fellow indie developers who are juggling multiple roles, I feel your struggle. The journey is tough, but the passion for creating something unique keeps us going. It’s about finding those precious pockets of time, making the most of them, and, above all, cherishing the support of loved ones.

As I continue this journey, I’ll keep sharing the highs and lows, hoping it resonates with others in similar situations. Remember, we’re not alone in this. Let’s keep pushing forward, one line of code at a time.
